Hi All,

I would like to know how you guys are dealing with upgrading Control Center/Zenoss Core.

I'm using Zenoss for about 2 years now and I'm very happy with it. Just the upgrade thing is driving me crazy. My personal experience is that doing an upgrade is most likely leading to problems although I followed the upgrade documentation. Since I know that setting up a completely new system is a lot of work (had to do it twice) I'm not in the mood to touch my production system.

Any feedback is appreciated!

Thank you,

Martin

Definitely make sure you backup your system before you start. I run a VM so I take a snapshot before I start. The Control Center backup/restore is also a great tool. I've been upgrading from Zenoss 5.0.3 up to 5.2.1 and there is always a catch somewhere.

If you're able, I would copy/build a system in a lab to test the process. Build a server and only install Control Center for the version you're on; take a Control Center backup of your production system; restore that backup to the lab.

Personally, I have a QA server to monitor our QA environment, but no one really uses it so I'm free to test as needed.

Got another server, installed CentOS 7 and the Control Center version running on thje pruduction host (1.1.9) and did a restore from the latest backup. restore finished successfully and Zenoss Core application is there but no data at all (no users, no settings, no devices, no templates, no metrics, etc.).

I hope that the priduction system will never ever crash ;)

Any ideas?

You setup your disks the same as in production? Off the top of my head that's the only thing I can think of that might affect the restore. I've done numerous restores in the past and I always get devices, graphs, data, users, etc loaded.

Exactly the  same server (equal hardware with same partition tables, software versions, etc.).

Unfortunately it is no longer possible. I set up a new system with latest versions of Control Center and Zenoss Core, did a restore from my backup and everything went fine. So I'm happy now.

Anyway...thanks for your help!
