Is SSL required to run the appliance I got the new PDF instructions, but I don't see any reference to SSL setup/configuration.

Yes, though everything is installed and configured to run out of the box, so there is nothing you need to do aside from go to the Control Center UI/CLI. I can repost the instructions how to disable SSL if you need them.
