Subject: | Zenoss 5 is it just me ? |

Hi everyone
I am fairly new to zenoss (couple of daysplaying with tool).coming from Sensu perspective it seems as Zenoss tries so hard to hide how it works. and it just shows you that it "running". but that has major drawbacks if you hit an issue you wouldn't know from where to start. Are they doing this deliberately so that we use the enterprise edition, or just lack of documentation
PS : this is not to discreet the enterprise edition just an honest overview of the tool for less than week
thanks

My personal feeling is that your comment is accurate if you are using Zenoss 5. The docker infrastructure obfuscates the workings of the actual Zenoss application.
If you are using Zenoss 4, it is much easier to understand what is going on and to find logs and tools.
This is the case whether you are using Core or the chargeable enterprise version.
Personally, I am sticking with Zenoss 4.2.5 SUP 671.
Cheers,
Jane

I second you jcurry. But the beauty of zenoss 5 comes out if you are trying to monitor large infrstructure with millions of datapoints. Zenoss 5 is the only tool that i can see which can handle that kind of infrastructure and still give you access to do what ever you want to do.And again it has it's own drawbacks but i think it's more coming from docker rather than zenoss code.
Thanks,
Kr!

Hi Jcurry,
As we are on this thread, i have a questions which longtime zenoss users like you can assit people like me. I hvae a requirement to monitor some basci url's. From my experience i feel 5.x is not that stable compared to 4.2.5. For example i implemented 4.2.5 4 months back, and i never login to that box again as i don't see any issues. But that's not the case with 5.x.
Can you please assist me which way should i go 4.2.5 or 5.x
Thanks,
Kr!

Me personally 4.2.5 with SUP 671 every time.
If you don't need the big scalability or redundancy then 5.x just costs you resource and effort.
Cheers,
Jane

I know I posted almost the exact same thing in another thread, but I think it fits here as well. I just started in on building a new Zenoss 5 box for our environment and wow was I unpleasantly surprised! Zenoss was always a little tricky to get up and running, but just reading the Zenoss_Core_Planning_Guide_r5 and the Zenoss_Core_Installation_Guide_r5 makes my head wanted to explode (32 pages In v4 by page 7 you were logging in to a completed install). What a huge step backwards IMHO. Docker, 4 cores minimum, 20GB RAM, SSD or high-performance SAN, and the disk space requirements are unreal...
Docker 50GB
Control Center 50GB
Application Data 300GB
Application Backups 150GB
We currently have Zenoss monitoring our entire environment, quite well I may add, with 2 cores, 16GB RAM, & 40GB of disk space vs. the 550GBs of disk for v5 Theres something to be said for a few prerequisites and a simple RPM.
I guess for millions and millions of data points across 10s or 100s of locations this architectural change may be a necessary evil, but again IMHO, theyve absolutely killed the product for the small to midsized business. No one is going to go through all this for 10 servers when PRTG (Literally a 1 click install) is free at that level. We are building a fresh v4 server now instead, unfortunately once v4 stops being supported this seriously makes us have to consider a simpler solution like Solarwinds or PRTG. Wow, never thought Id see Solarwinds and simpler in the same sentence...
Build a fresh v4 server and ride it till it dies...
Just my 2...
