Subject: | Looking for others who started from ground zero to learn Zenoss |

So we have been admins on various sytems for years (various flavors of Unix, Windows, etc.) but never been Linux admins. We've never programmed in Python. We are brand new to Zenoss and are looking at Zenoss Core 5 as a potential tool.
We would love to get some recommendations on specific videos to watch, articles to read, topics to study so that we can understand how to work with Zenoss.
We are using the Wiki and this forum. When we do web searches for "zenoss" we get nearly 400,000 hits. 34,000 of them appear to be some sort of tutorial.
Needless to say, for us to begin at the top reference and work our way through means we will be busy for a few years.
And often, when we watch or read articles, there are assumptions that we already know Linux and Python.
So for those of you who also started like we are, what resources have you found most beneficial to understanding the various terminology and concepts needed to configure, administrate, troubleshoot, and use Zenoss Core for the obtaining, displaying, and clearing of alerts - that's our first goal. Once we are comfortable with that, we will be comfortable enough to discuss the other useful functions of the system.

There is no Royal Road to some of the knowledge you need to fully leverage Zenoss. It is quite important to know Linux, Docker (for v5)and at least somePython.
Obviously you should read and use the Official Zenoss Documentation. But there's more resources that can help you. Here are some resource I've used to get there.
For Linux:
I have found that I learned more from Installing a from-source distribution than through reading books. Doing is somewhat more productive here than reading. All distributions have their ideosyncharcies, but I'd suggest installing Funtoo from bare metal several times. This is tough but will teach you a lot, fast, you can also leverage their documentation and IRC channel. Pick a different project to complete each time, repeat both exercises from scratch until you're comfortable. (this might take a weekend).
Why go this route You'll learn the following indispensible skills:
For Python:
Nearly everyone uses Learn Python The Hard Way. It's free online. Once you've got some comfort with Python start by writing transforms before graduating to ZenPacks. Remember, Zenoss 5.1uses Python 2.7. The author of Learn Python The Hard Way suggests reading code on Github to familiarize yourself with how Python looks. I'd suggest using the Zenoss Github Repository for that.
For Docker:
Use this training slide deck from Docker's training at SCaLE in 2015. Start with a CentOS orUbuntusystemand follow their guide.
Once you've accomplished this, you should have most of the tools you need.
