Upgrading from 4.2.3 to 5

We're running 4.2.3 and we pretty much only are using it for checking to see if the switch/server/etc. is up or down. We would like to do more with it but no one is taking the bull by the horns and becoming THE Zenoss Admin.

Is there any overriding reason to upgrade to 5.0 I understand it has a feature to find devices and whatever SNMP info that can be pulled from these devices but is that the only big upgrade

Thanks.

The perf data system is quite nice. I'd recommend upgrading to 4.2.5 at least as thousands of bugs have been fixed since 4.2.3. It should take only a few hours to test a snapshot, and then upgrade on the production box. After upgrade you will want to evaluate using ZenUp to get some additional patches released after 4.2.5. http://wiki.zenoss.org/ZenUp

Completely endorse Trelane's recommendation. 4.2.5 with the latest SUP 671 will be far more stable.

I personally would not go to 5, especially given your current requirements.

Zenoss, from way back, has been able to discover devices and pull SNMP info - definitely no need to go to Zenoss 5 to get that.

Cheers,

Jane

Ctav,

I'm going to agree with Jane and Andrew on this. They're very much correct-4.2.5 is the way to go for your case. Zenoss 5 is somewhat more scalable and has a superior performance data storage backend. That said I don't think either of these are selling points for this use case.

Perhaps the one thing I could vouch for as useful in Zenoss 5 for your case is the dramatically imroved dashboarding.

If you need more guidence don't hesitate to reach out!

Thanks everybody. Exactly what I needed.

Now if we only had enough VM space for the test server. *sigh*
