Hello,

I have used older versions of Zenoss (< 3.0) to monitor devices on my network but because I am on the road often, I need to be able to acknowledge events when I'm not on the local network. I'm looking into using Zenoss 4.2.4 but want to see if this has gotten any easier. I've looked into some of the iOS and Android based apps but given that I may not have VPN access, email seems like the easiest way to do this.

On the old forum, I found a solution to rig up a POP email account using Fetchmail and then pass comments to Zenoss via a Python script. For those of you using Zenoss 4.2.x, are there any better solutions for remote event acknowledgment

Thanks in advance.

To fight the same problem we have Zenoss forward critical alerts and when those alerts clear to our helpdesk. I receive the alert and if I don't get a clear within a few minutes, I remote in and see what is wrong.

Port forwarding and VPN access are the easiest solutions, but it sounds like you've already reviewed those methods.

While I don't usually have the same issue you describe, I would love to see more integration with email replies. Our NOC usually replies to zenoss emails with information such as saying they're part of a scheduled maintenance, or even breaking into an outage thread. I would like to see those automatically integrate into the event log messages.

Then, a "buzzword" like "Zenoss.Acknowledge" could be read by zenoss as an action to perform. It would check the email address of the source, and associate their user account with the requested action - only if the account is a) allowed to b) this feature is enabled by the user.

The trickiest part would probably be understanding reply items and ignoring them, especially if there are multiple actions in an email.

Just my two-cents.

This would be an interesting project.
