DNS monitoring on 6.x

Hi All,
Is there a way to monitor DNS , could only find some Zenpacks for v4,v5.
Does it make sense on the available Zenpacks for v4 to downgrade?
Are there any steps to be taken to export / import from v6 -> v4.
Zenoss is used as nice to have so the commercial version is not really in the picture.
Kind Regards, Jeroen

Jeroen,

The DNSMonitor ZenPack only lists versions 4 and 5 on its documentation page, but it should be installed on your 6.x install.  You can check:

1. Advanced > Settings > ZenPacks for ZenPacks.zenoss.DnsMonitor
2. Advanced > Monitoring Templates for the DNSMonitor template.

By default, the template is unbound.  You can either:

1. manually bind it to your DNS servers
2. Create a child device class of the appropriate class, bind the template to that class, and then move your DNS servers into it.

If you have any questions about the steps, feel free to respond in this thread.

Hi Jeroen,
Excellent question! I'm interested in if there's a solution for Zenoss 6. I'm not aware of any at the moment.

Best regards,

I just fired up my Core 6 install and it appears that the DNSMonitor ZenPack does *not* ship with core.

Let me see what I can dig up.

So, I did some digging and the DNSMonitor ZenPack should have been available for download.  Due to an oversight, it didn't land where it should have.

I'm working on getting its doc page updated and the latest copy into position for download.

In the meantime, I'm attaching a copy here.  (Note: you'll need to unzip the file to get to the .egg.)

The install requirements are:

Zenoss Core 4.2 or higher
PythonCollector ZenPack

Thanks Michael,

Works great, already loaded/configured and already making graphs.
(Maybe for completeness I am running Zenoss 6.1.2 r132)
Added two domain names to test one internal one external.

Reason for having this was that one of the six DNS servers stopped resolving external sites.
(gives weird behaviour on the network) (Nothing found on the Microsoft DNS servers, and restart solved the issue).
So I was very eager to have monitoring in place for this situation.

Already played with removing the internal test site name and it nicely produced the alarms/events.

So it looks like it is doing a perferct Job and a nice bonus for having the graphs of the response.

Many Thanks,

Jeroen Berning
