I would love to see some more tutorials on zenpacklib, particularly one on using the CommandPlugin to model a device. Maybe it could use cat /etc/*-release or some variation to query linux servers for their OS release information, and return this in the OS Model field in addtion to the kernel information. It might also add in and monitor some components.

We all would! There is a comprehensive ZenPack Development Guide which will be released in the next few months. It's a major collaborative effort between one of our community members, and Zenoss Engineering. I believe it will fill your needs.
