Hi Zenoss team,
Is there any migration document/issues/pitfalls while moving Zenpacks from 4.2.x to 5
What is known not to work because of architectural change
Please provide any insights on this.
Thanks,
LN

It's currently not supported but technically doable in the future. We will be providing a supported migration path in the next major release after Core/RM 5.
Aside from non-Zenoss ZenPacks that will need to be updated, RRD data will need to be migrated across + other things that will need to be taken into consideration such as your deployment architecture etc.
The recommended path at this point in time is for customers to run 5.0 in parallel and perform a phased migration over time or wait until the next major release after 5.0 comes out, which will include a 4.2.X-5.X migration tool.

If prior performance data is discounted, then how compatible are zenpacks designed on 4.x to work with 5.0
My understanding is zenpacks do not commit data to the RRD database, it was part of zenoss collector framework, which is outside zenpack code. So this should not likely be an issue from migrating from 4.x to 5.0 Is that not so
But is there any change within zenoss 5.0 that breaks zenpack interface to core zenoss
Your response and help is much appreciated.

Certain facade methods may no longer work as expected though we have done our best to support existing RRDtool API calls, we have had to change a few things on the backend to support the new big data backend. Also running things in containers can cause problems for certain ZenPacks that make assumptions about access to other ZenPack processes natively etc.
More documentation will be furnished when we are closing to releasing 5.0, specifically in relation to ZenPack development.

Not really. Best bet is to stand up a test instance and test out all your zenpacks. Most of the newer 4.2.x ZenPacks should work. If not, they may only need some minor changes.
If you are looking for documentation on creating your own ZenPacks, there is an excellent guide written by Jane Curry and the community.

And I haven't heard any plans for the migration tool to be created any time soon.
