I am now using the zenoss 3.1 version and plan to upgrade the core to 4 or 5. Which version (4.x or 5.x) should I use and which one is more stable?

I would suggest you should consider a few other factors:

How big is your environment?  Do you have remote collectors? Do you have a firm requirement for high availability Zenoss? Do you have a lot of  resource (human and hardware) to dedicate to managing Zenoss?  If you are answering "yes" then you might consider 5.x (though 6.x is supposed to be re-released "soon").  Are these more stable than 4.2.5 - I would say "no"

If you have a thousand or less devices and limited hardware and human resource, I would go for 4.2.5 with service update SUP732 (the latest).  This is stable.

Don't even think of starting with 5.x with less than 20Gb of RAM and 4 cpus.  Administering it is VERY different from managing your 3.x environment.  There is no upgrade path from something pre 5.x to Zenoss 5.  You may manage to move by way of a series of upgrades, from 3.1 4.2.5.

Cheers,
Jane

Jane has some good points. When I look at if I want to use 4 or 5+, I look at the size of the environment I will be monitoring, what kind of devices and how complicated the monitoring will be (Think monitoring a plain Linux server vs monitoring vSphere and everything in it)

Another point is that Zenoss is more focused around 5.x/6.x fixes and improvements and at some point 4.x will be EOL. So, while you will see quicker fixes and added features in 5.x+, those will most likely never make it to 4.x.

Hi All,

I am in a similar situation and I need an advice.

We have about 200 devices under monitoring, and we have these kind of devices:

HP Linux Server (Proliant)
Windows 2012 R2 Server
VMWare Virtual Machine
Cisco Router and switch (7600, 6500, 2960, 4900, 3650, 3750, sf300 ecc ecc)
Juniper Firewall (ssg-140)
Fortinet Firewall
Enclosure Blade HP (OA, VC, ESXi)
San Switch Brocade
HP Disk Array and Tape Library

We monitor this with Zenoss 4.2.5 but we are planning a new installation to sort out some server problem.
Now the big question.
We can still use Zenoss 4.2.5 even if it will be EOF quickly or move to a new installation of Zenoss 5 or 6?
What do you suggest me? 4.2.5, 5 or 6? Are ZenPack compatible with Zenoss 5 or 6?
What is better between 5 and 6? Which hardware requirements are needed (20G ram and 4 CPU)?

Other point is that in our company I am the only one who manage and configure Zenoss tool and server.

Thanks
Ale

Hi Ale,
Personal opinion here - I would go with 4.2.5.  You obviously know that product and you say you are the only person that looks after Zenoss.  Believe me - administering Zenoss 5 is very different!

However much hardware you have, you will manage more devices with Zenoss 4, provided you don't need the high availability or the remote collectors - and with 200 devices, you almost certainly don't need remote collectors.
The ZenPack question is a good one.  Some are supported on 5 and other either are not or have not been tested.  Do you want to post a list of your ZenPacks?

Cheers,
Jane

Thanks Jane, sorry I opened a new tread because I thought no one was reading this!!! If some one has administrator rules can delete that one.

But after reading what you say, i think that we will go to use 4.2.5... do you consider it a risk? i'm scared because i think it is going end of life

The list of zenpack I use is very long (i posted this question lot of time ago and you told me that maybe all one have compatibility but it was better "to try" in test environment if they work in Zenoss 5.x)

Hi Ale,
Is this a Zenoss Core installation or do you have the chargeable Service Dynamics?  If it is Core, then your support, for several years already, has been these forums, IRC and the community.  If you have a chargeable product that includes support, then it is perhaps a different decision.

It is always a concern when an organisation says that a product is  heading towards end of support - but then you have to look at what they are replacing it with.  Look at the  post today about the new 6.1 - new 6.1.0 (and others) 100%cpu .  Now this may be user error - though it says two people have seen similar things - but there is a lot of validity in the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" :)

Just my two pennorth!

Cheers,
Jane

We use Core version now.
We asked to John and other Zenoss people an evaluation about move to Enterprise version but after seeing our environment they suggest us to stay in Core Version.
Any way, I understood your point of view and you convinced me to do a new installation of Zenoss 4.2.5 last release available and I do not care about 5 and 6.

Thanks a lot and Merry Xmas :D
Ale
