The 5.0 GA announcement says: "Zenoss will provide a way to migrate your Zenoss Core 4.2.x installation to the Zenoss Core 5.x."
Almost one year later there is still is no official way for migration, not even an announcement about when it will be available. In fact, the "Announcement" section of the forum is completely empty. I could not even find a reasonably current road map statement.
At the same time, development of 4.x seems to have come to an end, the latest SP457 is dated April 2015. The only EOL information that I was able to find says that "... 4.x EOL wouldnt be until Q1, 2016."
Looks like the future of Zenoss as an open source IT monitoring solution is quite dark.
I'd love to continue working with the community version of Zenoss, but not if I am forced to start over with V.5.0 from scratch and if I have the impression of riding a dead horse.
So please prove me to be wrong!!!

You are wrong and too pessimist. It's a open source => you can follow how Zenoss is developing import Zenpack https://github.com/zenoss/ZenPacks.zenoss.Import4 - actually project was tagged with tag 1.0.0 2 days ago.
Devops Monitoring Expert advice:
Dockerize/automate/monitor all the things.
DevOps stack:
Docker / Kubernetes / Mesos / Zabbix / Zenoss / Grafana / Puppet / Ansible / Vagrant / Terraform /
Elasticsearch
