Subject: | Virtual URL's not working |

I just installed Zenoss v5.0 OVA in my lab.
It says that Zenoss core is running and gives me the virtual URL (https://zenoss5.zenossmaster). When I click on the link I get a DNS resolve error - 'Server not found. Firefox can't find the server at zenoss5.zenossmaster.'
How do I make this work - do I have to set them up in DNS (not a realistic option in this lab) Or can I just go to the IP:Port instead of using the virtual host names
Thanks,
Eric

You do need these setup - and the others for hbase etc - see the Zenoss 5 Install Guide - page 34 - "Starting and Tuning Zenoss Core". I have always used DNS but you can put the appropriate entry into /etc/hosts.

Jane

The doc does not really tell you what value 'cc' is in the example on page 37. I think it is the Deployment ID, but not sure.

In the Install doc it references 'cc' as the name, but does not tell you what value that refers to.
Is it the Deployment ID, the Application, virtual host name, or something else
Thanks,
Eric

In the example in the admin guide,
192.0.2.12 cc.big.io cc zenoss5.cc hbase.cc opentsdb.cc rabbitmq.cc
This is a simple hosts file entry. So the IP address of your Zenoss server is 192.0.2.12.
It's hostname - basic hostname, no fancy Zenoss docker stuff - is cc.big.io
The /etc/hosts entry has a fully-qualified domain name first - cc.domain.io
It then has an alias which is the short name - cc
The zenoss5.cc hbase.cc opentsdb.cc rabbitmq.cc stuff
is then more aliases

Jane

I should note that at least on this rare occasion I got to look far more intelligent than usual.
Thanks Jane!

I am in a lab in a secure facility, and I do not have admin rights on the machines I am working on so I cannot edit the /etc/hosts file on the workstation I am using. It also makes no sense to have to custom-configure DNS in a lab just to do an evaluation.
Quite honestly, as a former Zenoss engineer I am really disappointed with how control center works. I used to be able to set up a completely independent test system without having to engage services like DNS just to get it running. Forcing all these alias' on Linux makes no sense - it feels like you are trying to dumb things down for the user, but it makes things more complicated for the engineer. Unfortunately when doing an evaluation the engineer is the user so it seems like you are shooting yourself in the foot.
Is there a way to run an evaluation using IP addresses only If I cannot do that we may have to take a pass on Zenoss, which would suck because I know the product and the value we will get from both the open source version and the enterprise version.
