On my previous Zenoss 4 installation I had an external application that would connect to Zenoss MySQL to provide some reports about events...
How can I connect on Zenoss 5 database now from an external host

Edit your DB service definition:
# serviced service edit mariadb
Export vhost (e.g. mysql) and DB port (e.g. 3306) - doc http://controlcenter.io/docs/topics/svcdef-endpoint.html
restart mariadb service and your zenoss DB will be always exposed on defined vhost:port
See another service definitions for examples:
# serviced service edit opentsdb
