Hi all,

We are working with Zenoss 5 for 6 months now. We have few experience on Zenoss 4 but we want to have a return of experience about other Zenoss 5 users that had also an experience of older Zenoss versions.

For exemple, we want to know what's the exact added value of using docker. We want to have a pro/cons about this concept and its implementation around Zenoss.

Kind regards,

CPaFoo

Zenoss 5: 1.) scalability - it's advantage for huge Zenoss deployments 2.) immutable containers 3.) micro-service architecture You must be familiar with container concept. Jerome is famous in Docker world - http://www.slideshare.net/jpetazzo/presentations

Devops Monitoring Expert advice: Dockerize/automate/monitor all the things.

DevOps stack: Docker / Kubernetes / Mesos / Zabbix / Zenoss / Grafana / Puppet / Ansible / Vagrant / Terraform / Elasticsearch

Zenoss 4 advantages:

  1. Proven platform with a wealth of customer and community experience
  2. Much better documentation
  3. Much easier to develop ZenPacks (and then move them to Zenoss 5 if that's what you want). Thus more ZenPacks available for 4.
  4. Much smaller hardware footprint

Zenoss 4 disadvantages:

  1. Not much active developmemnt going on on Core platform (last ZUP update April 2015)
  2. Performance data in RRD files - much less scaleable and harder to manipulate than the new Zenoss 5 TSDB platform

Cheers,

Jane

As we are moitoring about 80 hosts, for us docker is not only useless, but it makes the Zenoss VM by FAR the most resource eater of all.

To be honest, the docker thing is more an issue that an advantage for us. And since the documentation is very poor - and in PDF (why) - we are seriously thinking of giving up with Zenoss and looking for another solution.

I hope so, After fighting 5 months with Zenoss 5, I consider it nearly unusable.

Last issue today, a zope instance flapping for unknown reason. I even don't try to create a ticket to the support, it is most of the time useless.
