Sometimes a device is off-line, and in our case wouldnt ping. We'd like to see the device is flagged as down when ping fails. While the device is down we prefer zenoss to not bother with data collection - as that would ultimately fail too, and these additional failures all generate fail events. Is there a way to setup zenoss to stop data collecting when a device fails due to ping.

The one, first, you can enter into the device. Click the overview, and you can see the production state. You can set it as Decommissioned. So the zenoss will not monitor the device.
The another way, you can use the maintaince window. But I think you can solve your problem as the first way.
