Beyond monitoring?

Taking a look at Zenoss for the first time. Reminds me a lot of the old days with Big Brother and the add-ons I wrote to handle common problems automatically. Like it.

But, as good as this may I'm looking for the next step. Capacity Management. The ability to define workloads, forecast those workloads into the future. Rightsizng tools. Filtering capabilities. Long term storage of performance data. The ability to generate custom reports and executive dashboards, being able to start at a overview level and drill down to the specifics.

I haven't seen that Xenoss is capable of this right now. Am I right Is it just a monitoring tool

TIA

Tony.

My opinion:

Monitoring systems stuck at ninetieths.

The biggest problem of current Zenoss is value storage - RRD (released in 1999). It was perfect solution for time series for that time, but now it's very inflexible. It's big problem to provide your required functionality with RRDs. But still you can develop your own zenpack, which will solve your needs. (BTW: It'll be better in new Zenoss 5, where OpenTSDB is used as value storage)

Required functionality belongs to "enterprise" domain, so some your needs can be solved by using enterprise Zenoss features, e.g. Analytics for "Predictive reporting and projections for capacity planning". Take a look also at enterprise Zenoss features.

Devops Monitoring Expert advice: Dockerize/automate/monitor all the things.

I'm assuming that RRD would be replaceable in some fashion. The freebie versions always seem to be lacking in one area or another.

Yep, you're spot on with pegging my questions on the enterprise level. We're almost at 30K servers today and could be adding another 10K by the end of '16. But I just found out yesterday that Zenoss is being used in a pocket of the company. Now to track them down...

Thanks Jan. Interesting talk btw.
