Hi,

I am currently studying Zenoss core in part of our new solution we are trying to build.

We have a couple of monitoring tools we are using and want to keep using ( agents based ) .

We would only be using zenoss core only a central console which would receive alerts from monitoring tools and then forward those alerts to remedy using script to create tickets.

If we build our own scripts, can we use zenoss core free version to achieve all that

Thanks

Absolutely Zenoss Core can do that. The Zenoss Sales rep may possibly have a different agenda ;)

As with any monitoring tool, it is impossible to give accurate sizing details because everyone does different things.

How are you planning to forward events to Zenoss It can natively collect syslog messages and SNMP traps and one of those might be the easiest way forward for you.

If you want more detailed information on the Zenoss Event management system, you might pull my paper on this from https://www.skills-1st.co.uk/papers/jane/zenoss4-events/

Jane

New to Zenoss and researching Event management specifically for integration with Remedy.
Jane posted some info I will be going through but have a few basic questions.. Can I do with core or do I need more $$$
Do I need a for cost Zenpack to talk to remedy?
If not is it a framework where I would have to develop commands or is a 'configuration'?
I am talking to sales and they have bee helpful but not sure if there is a simpler solution.  I need to take in events from different tools and allow them to open remedy tickets.

Thanks
John

Hi John,
Integration with Remedy is not something you will get out of the box.  The chargeable Service Dynamics (SD) is "a box" that I believe can provide a ZenPack that will help you; the Core "box" doesn't have that.

I have worked with several people going this route and you need to ask yourselves fairly carefully what you mean by "integration".  It is not difficult , with either Core or SD, to setup Zenoss to forward an event to a trouble ticket system.  The fun comes when your trouble ticket people then want to include extra fields to represent, in your case, Remedy queues, priorities, administrators, .....  The next request then is typically, when action is taken in a Remedy ticket, how that is reflected back into Zenoss.

This all becomes a lot more complicated and, even if you go with SD, I suspect you also need chargeable services to wrap around that.  It's one of those jobs where every organisation has their own customisation and requirements so I have not found any easy "standard" solution.

If you go with a Core solution then, other than a very simple event forwarding to Remedy, you would be talking about developing a ZenPack.

Cheers,
Jane

Thank you Jane!  I thought that might be the answer.  Like any organization we are trying to keep it as simple and cost effective as we can. Was hoping to avoid the cost of SD and not have to develop too much on our end.  So we are talking to the commercial end of Zenoss.
Thanks again for the clarity
