Hi

I have read on http://wiki.zenoss.org/Zenoss_Core_5_Beta/FAQ that a migrate tool would be released to enable us to migrate a zenoss 4.2.5 install to a 5.0 install... unfortunately I'm not able to find this tool anywhere... Anybody know how a migrate may be performed or is it just a no-go

I really hope that migrating is possible as we have been very fond of zenoss core but if we need to manually migrate once again then it may not be zenoss that will be the next monitoring solution for us :-(

Our Zenoss 4.2 is a "clean install" on Centos 6.6.

I believe that there is supposed to be a tool available for the Zenoss 5.1 release... At least, that's what I'm waiting for. Otherwise, it might be the same for us - manual migrations shouldn't be necessary IMHO. James Pulver CLASSE Computer Group Cornell University

Thomas:

It looks like the 5.1 release will really be the 5.2 release. We're using 5.1 as an internal milestone for some fixes. The migration script is still coming! There's a pre-alpha version in the zenoss-toolbox github repo. Please test and file bugs!

So without the migration tool, is there another way to get the data off and onto a new zenoss 5 host We have created a new zenoss 5 VM and I am OK with doing a manual procedure if there is one. Is there Dont really want to wait possibly years for this tool to materialize.

is there some guide in a manual migration process as in, without re-setting up from scratch

thanks

I doubt it will be years, more like months.

I doubt 3.x can be migrated using this method, HOWEVER 3.x can be migrated to 4.x. http://wiki.zenoss.org/Upgrading_Zenoss
I would _STRONGLY_ suggest getting to 4.2.5 ASAP as there are security vulnerabilities in 3.x which is EOL.

probably, but its an internal server, not externally accessible, so not too worried about security on it. Its also the VM version, hopefully the guide covers that.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks a lot for this tantalizing piece of information! I have been looking all over for it and & now I finally see it here! (Importing Zenoss 4.x performance data into a Zenoss 5 instance is critical for us.)

However, based on my searching, I think it may be a little incomplete - can you please tell me if my understanding here is correct:

To export data from 4.x and import it into 5.x, you must:

  1. Use export4.py from here: https://github.com/zenoss/zenoss.toolbox/blob/develop/src/zenoss/toolbox/import4tools/export4.py. This is basically a wrapper around the zenbackup utility which, among other things, exports the performance data from RRD.
  2. Import that data into your 5.x instance using import4 here: https://github.com/zenoss/ZenPacks.zenoss.Import4/blob/develop/ZenPacks/zenoss/Import4/bin/import4 which, among other things, allows you to import the exported performance data into TSDB

So, both the zenoss.toolbox and the Import4 repositories are needed.

(If this is correct, I suggest it would be helpful to include a link to some description of this to this section in the wiki: http://wiki.zenoss.org/Zenoss_Core_5_Beta/FAQ#What_is_the_upgrade_path_from_4.x_to_5.x.3F)

Thanks,

Brian.

Brian,

That information should be included at some point, but the last guidance I got internally is that the migration path is Alpha, and barely supported at this point (we are still working on it and expect it to release). As I said, get to 4.2.5, install the latest ZUP and you should be in a good spot for the migration. I would absolutely have a 5.x instance running on a dev/staging box (not in Prod) and test the ZenPacks you need before considering going forward.

There is a project (which is not yet stable) for migrating code in the Zenoss Toolbox.
Please take a look here, test, and submit bugs. Note that you will have to be on 4.2.xhttps://github.com/zenoss/zenoss.toolbox/tree/MakeReady-2.1.0dev/src/zenoss/toolbox/import4tools.

Has anybody had any success using this migration tool I've downloaded the export4.py script and run it but it just generates errors. Could somebody provide some guidance on which of these files I need, where they should be located, and which ones I need to run manually
